In preparation
Before applying for a thesis we recommend you to complete our Contemporary Topics in Innovation seminar. This will familiarize you with our methods and research focus and help you with choosing a topic and preparing a successful proposal. It does not guarantee you a supervision.
Writing a master's thesis @ TIM
Following a formal agreement of supervision you will schedule your first preparatory meeting in which you will discuss further details about the thesis project. You should expect several meetings over the duration of your writing process. Once again we want to stress that we assume that you will be able to dedicate the equivalent of 6 months full time work to your thesis project and will make recommendations about the working process accordingly. This means in each meeting you will receive a list of points and a time frame in which to accomplish them before the next appointment. Please schedule appointments about 2 weeks in advance.
The curriculum does not specify a time frame for finishing a master's thesis, but please be aware that we feel 6 months to be a reasonable timespan. And due to limited supervision resources reserve the option to revoke the supervision agreement should it seem like progress is stalling or that the elected topic has lost relevance in the meantime.
It is possible to write a thesis with us without taking our specialization but in this case make sure to include an upload of your transcript so that we can evaluate whether your studies up to that point have sufficiently prepared you for writing a thesis in the chair's research topics.
Research Question & Proposal
Please use the resources below when crafting the proposal and if intending an original thesis topic (as supposed to the suggested ones).
Formal requirements
We expect you to have familiarized yourself with the formal requirements set at the University of Vienna as well as our faculty, which you can find on the faculty homepage. Similarly we expect you to have informed yourself regarding the University's rules when writing a thesis at this institution and expect adherence to them.
As for font: Please use 11 point Times New Roman double-spaced.
The length requirements should be discussed with the supervisor as they will vary depending on the specifics of the chosen topic.
Proposed topics
While we offer the opportunity to propose and work on a a topic of your choice, we will also regularly post topic ideas on our homepage. These proposed topics will be posted here. Please be aware that if choosing one of these topics instead of a proposal it is necessary to add a motivational letter with the application form.
